Steve Nash is a Canadian basketball player. he played in the NBA from 1996-2015, with three teams, including the Dallas Mavericks (1998-2004), Los Lakers (2012-15), and two stints with the Phoenix Suns (1996-98, 2004-2012). He also played for Team Canada, and college basketball at Santa Clara.

After his high school career, which included a British Columbia provincial title, Ian Hyde-Lay, Nash’s high school coach, sent footage to 30 American universities, none of which offered Nash a scholarship. late in the process, Dick Davey, the Head Basketball Coach at Santa Clara viewed Nash’s tapes and went to watch him play. nervous that a major university would try to pull him away, Davey gave Nash a scholarship to play for the University of Santa Clara.

Nash would go on to have a successful career at Santa Clara leading the Broncos to multiple NCAA Division one Tournaments, which would include upset victories over second-ranked Arizona in his freshmen season, and seventh-ranked Maryland in his last season. He also earned West Coast Conference Player of the Year twice (1995 and 1996). In 2006, Steve Nash’s number 11 was retired by the University, becoming the University’s first student-athlete to receive this honor.

He won MVP twice in his NBA career and was an eight-time All-Star. He is now a member of the Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor, and his jersey number 13 was also retired by the team. Nash is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame since 2018.
