Alonzo Verge

There have been plenty of good performances in college sports this year, and I’m starting to recognize some of the young fire power athletes of the 2019-2020 school year. In Part three of this series, I’m shining the spotlight on Arizona State basketball player Alonzo Verge.

Verge entered his Junior Year at ASU, as a community college transfer, and played the entire season primarily off the bench. In his first five Pac-12 games, Verge struggled mightily, but turned up the heat shortly after that. In the next 13 games, Verge averaged 17.3 points per game, shot 49.4 percent from the field, and was a 71.2 percent shooter from the free throw line. During the Sun Devils mid-season seven game win streak, Verge averaged 20.6 points per game, and shot 53 percent from the field, 38.9 percent from the three point line, and 72.1 percent from the free throw line. His performance off the bench helped the Sun Devils to a 20-11 regular season record, and 11-7 in Pac-12 play, finishing third in the conference. It was the third straight 20-win season for the Devils. Verge also earned Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year.

Congratulations Verge, I look forward to seeing you back on the court next season.
