Built For Success: Nick Saban

Alabama Football is synonymous with the word success. The school has claimed a total seventeen National Championships, and has been led by some of the best college coaches ever, which includes Gene Stallings, Bear Bryant, and Nick Saban. The aforementioned Nick Saban is the current coach, and has held that position since 2007, during which time he has helped restore Alabama’s reputation as a national powerhouse.

Since taking over the reigns at Alabama, Nick Saban has had his team ranked nationally every season except 2007, and has put together five National Championship winning teams. His five championships with Alabama is second most in school history, behind Bear Bryant’s six. National Championship winning quarterbacks under Saban include Greg McElroy, A.J. McCarron, Jake Coker, Jalen Hurts, and Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa threw the game winning touchdown in an overtime victory against Georgia, to win the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship Game, after replacing Hurts as QB at halftime. The play occurred on an improbable pass from second and twenty six. Saban has also produced Alabama’s first two Heisman Trophy winners, Mark Ingram in 2009, and Derrick Henry in 2015. Saban’s overall record at Alabama is 152-23.

Saban’s Crimson Tide will be looking for improvement in 2020, after finishing the 2019 regular season with a 10-2 record. With Tua Tagovailoa being drafted by the Miami Dolphins with the fifth pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, Saban will have to turn to Mac Jones, the presumptive starting quarterback for 2020. Jones, who replaced the Injured Tua, started the final three games for the Crimson Tide in 2019, with victories over Arkansas and Western Carolina, before a painful  loss to rival Auburn in the Iron Bowl, in a game where Jones threw for 335 yards and four touchdowns. Jones would later throw for 327 yards and three touchdowns in Alabama’s 35-16 victory of Michigan in the Citrus Bowl.

Saban is a legend, and luckily for Bama fans, he’s here to stay.
