Margaret Court

Margaret Court is a retired female tennis player. She was born in Albury, New South Wales in 1942. Court is widely considered among the greatest women tennis players all-time. She holds the record for most Grand Slam singles titles with 24, and total Grand Slam titles with 64 (singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined). Court also has a total of 192 career singles titles. She is a former World Number One and achieved the Calendar Grand Slam in 1970. Margaret Court’s career lasted from 1960-1977.

Margaret Court made her professional tennis debut in 1960, and wasted no time in making her presence known. She won the 1960 Australian Open for the first time. This was the beginning of a dominant run for Court in Australia as she won 7 consecutive titles in the “Land Down Under” from 1960 to 1966. Margaret won the French Open for the first time in 1962. She also won the 1962 U.S. Open. She hit World Number One for the first time in 1962. Court won Wimbledon for the first time in 1963. In 1970, Court won the Calendar Grand Slam (winning all four majors in the same calendar year) becoming the first woman in the Open Era, and the second woman (Maureen Connolly) overall to achieve this feat. Throughout her singles career, Margaret won the Australian Open 11 times, French Open 5 times, Wimbledon 3 times, and the U.S. Open 5 times for a total of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. This remains a record for women tennis players with Serena Williams 2nd (23), and Steffi Graf 3rd (22).

Margaret Court won her first Grand Slam doubles title in 1961 at the Australian Open. She won the U.S. open in 1963, and in 1964 she won Wimbledon and the French Open. She achieved World Number One in doubles in 1963. In her doubles career, Court won the Australian Open 8 times, the French Open 4 times (3 straight from 1964-1966), Wimbledon 2 times, and the U.S. Open 5 times. She also won the WTA Tour Finals in doubles in 1973 and 1975.

Margaret Court did really well in mixed doubles. She achieved the mixed doubles Calendar Grand Slam in 1963 and again in 1965. Court won the Australian Open mixed doubles 4 times, Wimbledon 5 times, and the U.S. Open 8 times (five straight from 1961-1965). In total, Margaret Court won 24 Grand Slam singles titles, 19 doubles, and 21 mixed doubles for a combined record 64 Grand Slam titles.

Margaret Court represented Australia in the Fed Cup. She helped lead the Australian team to victory in 1964, 1965, 1968, and 1971.

Margaret Court is a national icon in Australia, and one of the main arenas used for the Australian Open is named in her honor.

It’s impossible to determine who the goat is in women’s tennis. To put it simply, Court, Graf, and Williams played in three different eras, and each of them are the goats of their era.
