Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is a retired American swimmer. He’s 36 years-old. He competed for the U.S. at the Olympics from 2004-2016. He also represented the U.S. at the World Championships and the Pan-Pacific Games. He has a total of 28 Olympic Medals. 23 of those are Gold. This makes Phelps the most decorated Olympic athlete ever. In addition to his Olympic medal count, Phelps has 27 Gold Medals at World Championships and 16 Golds at the Pan-Pacific Games. This gives Phelps a grand total of 66 Gold Medals across all levels of international championship events.

Michael Phelps first competed at the World Championships in 2001 in long course races. He won a Gold in 2001. He remained dominant at World Championships in long course racing with 4 gold medals in 2003, 5 Golds in 2005, 7 Golds in 2007, 5 Golds in 2009, and 4 Golds in 2011. He’s also won Silver Medals in the 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2011 World Championships as well as a Bronze in 2011. Phelps also has a Gold at the 2004 World Championships short course racing. In total, Phelps won 27 World Championships Gold Medals, 6 Silvers, and a Bronze.

Michael Phelps participated in the Pan-Pacific Games for the first time in 2002. He won three Gold Medals there. He competed in the Pan-Pacific Games all the way through 2014. He won 16 Gold Medals across all of those competitions and also won 5 Silvers.

Michael Phelps is best known for his record setting performances at the Olympic Games while representing Team USA. He won 8 medals in 2004 at Athens. 6 of those were Gold and the other two were Bronze. Phelps decided to up his game four years later when he won 8 Gold Medals at the 2008 Beijing Games. He won 4 more Golds in 2012 in London. In 2016, Phelps’ last Olympics, he claimed 5 Golds in Rio. That’s an impressive 23 Gold Medals in his Olympic Career. Additionally, Phelps won 3 Silvers for a grand total of 28 Olympic Medals.

Micheal Phelps won a total of 66 Gold Medals combined between the Olympics, World Championships, and Pan-Pacific Games. He has 14 Silvers combined in those competitions and 3 Bronzes. Phelps’ Olympic medal count of 28, is more medals than 161 countries. Losing was not in his DNA.

Michael Phelps retired following the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Phelps Joins Lindsey Vonn, Michelle Kwan, Mia Hamm, Billie Jean King, and Pat Summitt (posthumously) as some of the more recognizable names on a long list of athletes who will be inducted into the United States Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame Class of 2022 later in June. The ceremony will be held at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs on June 24.
