Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer is a former football head coach. He’s 58 years-old. He has coached college football as the head coach of Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State. Meyer never had a losing record as a college football head coach. Meyer had a brief stint as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Prior to landing his first head coaching job at Bowling Green, Meyer worked as an assistant coach in both high school and college. He started out as a defensive backs coach at St. Xavier High School in cincinnati. After that, he spent some time as a grad-assistant at Ohio State before working for Illinois State as the linebackers coach and then quarterbacks and receiving coach. Meyer also spent time as wide receivers coach at Colorado State and the same role at Notre Dame before seeking his first head coaching job.

Impressed with his resume as an assistant coach, Bowling Green hired Urban Meyer to be their head coach for their football team in 2001. Meyer’s short time with Bowling Green saw great success. The Green Falcons went 8-3 (5-3 in conference play) in 2001, and 9-3 (6-2 in conference play) in 2002. After two seasons, with a combined record of 17-6 (11-5 in conference play), Meyer would leave Bowling Green to take over as head coach of Utah.

Urban Meyer spent two seasons as the head coach of Utah. The Utes went 10-2 in 2003 and won the Liberty Bowl against Southern Mississippi. The Utes went undefeated in 2004 and won the Fiesta Bowl against Pittsburgh. Meyer left after the 2004 season to take the head coaching job at Florida.

The Florida Gators hired Urban Meyer as their head football coach ahead of the 2005 season. Under the direction of Meyer, the Gators made it to a bowl game every year and won the BCS National Championship in 2006 and 2008. Tim Tebow was the quarterback for both of the national championship games. Tebow won the Heisman Trophy in 2007. Meyer went 65-15 at the helm of Florida, which included a 36-12 record against the SEC. The Gators went undefeated against the SEC in 2009 and won the Sugar Bowl. Meyer left Florida after the 2010 season.

After two years away from coaching, Urban Meyer was hired to take over head coaching duties at Ohio State. The Buckeyes went undefeated against the Big Ten in each of Meyer’s first three seasons, which included a national championship in 2014. This was Meyer’s third national championship as a college football head coach. The Buckeyes won the Rose Bowl in 2018, which was Meyer’s last season as head coach of Ohio State. Meyer finished with an impressive record of 83-9 from 2012 to 2018 as head coach of Ohio State, which included a 54-4 record against the Big Ten.

Urban Meyer’s overall record as a college football head coach is 187-32.

After taking three years off, Urban Meyer was hired as the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. The Jaguars drafted Trevor Lawrence as their future quarterback with the number one overall pick. The Jaguars struggled to a 2-11 record before eventually firing Urban Meyer midway through the 2021 NFL season. Meyer has not been offered another head coaching job since being let go by the Jaguars.
