Jim Harbaugh

Jim Harbaugh is a former football player and a current head coach. He’s 58 years-old. He played college football for the University of Michigan. He played in the NFL from 1987 to 2001. He is the current head football coach at the University of Michigan. Harbaugh previously coached at Stanford. He was also the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Jim Harbaugh played football for the Junior League Ann Arbor Packers. He played for the Tappan Junior High team before playing high school football at Pioneer High School. He transferred to play at Palo Alto High School after his father accepted a job as the defensive coordinator at Stanford. Harbaugh graduated high school in 1982.

Jim Harbaugh committed to play college football at the University of Michigan. He spent the 1982 and 1983 seasons on the bench as a 3rd string quarterback. Harbaugh played 5 games in 1984 before suffering a season-ending injury. He threw 60 completions in 111 pass attempts for 718 yards with 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Harbaugh rebounded nicely in 1985. He led the Wolverines to a 10-1-1 record and a victory over Nebraska in the 1986 Fiesta Bowl. Harbaugh completed 145 passes in 227 attempts, threw for 1,976 passing yards, with 18 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Harbaugh had his best college season in 1986 when he led the Wolverines to an 11-2 record. He was the losing quarterback in the 1987 Rose Bowl as the Wolverines lost to the Arizona State Sun Devils 22-15. Jeff Van Raaphorst was the quarterback for the Sun Devils. Jim Harbaugh declared for the 1987 NFL Draft.

Jim Harbaugh was selected by the Chicago Bears as the 26th pick in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft. He played for the Bears from 1987-1993. He joined the Indianapolis Colts in 1994 and stayed with them until 1997. He was a Pro-Bowl QB in 1995 and the 1995 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. he played one season with the Baltimore Ravens in 1998, and then two seasons with the San Diego Chargers from 1999-2000. Harbaugh was on the Lions practice squad in 2001 and later signed with the Carolina Panthers for the 2001 season. He retired from the NFL after the 2001 season. Harbaugh finished with 129 touchdown passes and 26,288 passing yards in his NFL career.

Jim Harbaugh got his first head coaching job at the University of San Diego. The Toreros went 7-4 in 2004 under the direction of Jim Harbaugh. The Toreros went 11-1 in both the 2005 and 2006 seasons, winning back-to-back Pioneer League titles in the process. They also won the 2006 Gridiron Classic. Harbaugh left San Diego for Stanford at the conclusion of the 2006 season.

Jim Harbaugh was named Stanford head coach for the 2007 season. The Cardinal struggled to a 4-8 record and a 7th place finish in the Pac-10. 2008 wasn’t much better for Stanford as they finished 5-7 and 6th in the Pac-10. Things would turn around for the Cardinal in 2009 with Andrew Luck as their starting quarterback. They finished the season 8-4 and qualified for the Sun Bowl, which they lost to the University of Oklahoma. Stanford had its best season in program history in 2010, when they finished 11-1 earning a 2nd place finish in the Pac-10. It was Stanford’s first 11-win season in program history and they qualified for the Orange Bowl where they blew out Virginia Tech. The bowl win was Stanford’s first since 1996 and it was their first ever BCS Bowl win. Harbaugh left Stanford at the end of the 2010 season to take the head coaching job for the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers hired Jim Harbaugh to be their head coach for the 2011 season. The 49ers went 13-3 in Harbaugh’s first season, but they lost to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game. The 49ers went 11-4-1 in 2012, but lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl. Harbaugh coached the 49ers to a 12-4 record in 2013, but lost to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. After a disappointing 8-8 season in 2014, the 49ers and Harbaugh mutually agreed to part ways.

The University of Michigan hired Jim Harbaugh to be their new head coach for the 2015 season. The Wolverines went 10-3 and won the Citrus Bowl. The Wolverines went 10-3 in 2016 as well, but lost in the Orange Bowl. The 2017 season proved to be very underwhelming for Harbaugh as the Wolverines went 8-5 including a loss in the Outback Bowl. The Wolverines went 10-3 in 2018 losing in the Peach Bowl, and 9-4 in 2019 losing in the Citrus Bowl. in a 6 game season in 2020, the Wolverines went 2-4. 2021 proved to be Harbaugh’s best season at Michigan so far. His team won 12 games, and captured the Big Ten title against Iowa. The Wolverines played the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff Semifinals at the Orange Bowl. They lost 34-11. The Bulldogs ended up facing the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship Game. Georgia claimed its first national championship in 40 years.

After being briefly considered for the Minnesota Vikings vacant head coaching position, Harbaugh ultimately decided to return to the Michigan Wolverines for the 2022 season.
