Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin is a Russian ice hockey player. He’s 37 years-old. He competes in the National Hockey League. He has spent his whole NHL career with the Washington Capitals. He is a 12-time NHL All-Star and a Stanley Cup champion. He previously played for Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Super League. Ovechkin also competed for the Russian Hockey Team.

Alex Ovechkin began his playing career with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Super League in 2001. In his first three seasons with Dynamo, he scored 36 goals and assisted on 32 goals in 152 games. Due to the NHL lockout of 2004/2005 that caused the whole season to be canceled, Ovechkin returned to Dynamo for a 4th season. The Dynamo won the Russian Super League title in the 04/05 season. After the season ended, Ovechkin would transition to the NHL where he would sign a deal with the Washington Capitals.

Alex Ovechkin signed a contract with the Washington Capitals ahead of the 2005/2006 NHL season. He was a part of the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2006. He made it onto the cover of the video game NHL 07. He would appear on the cover of the NHL video game for a second time in his career when he appeared on the 2021 version. He was named to an NHL All-Star roster for the first time in 2007. This was the first of 12 All-Star selections in his career. Ovechkin won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018 when his team beat the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. The Golden Knights were an expansion team in their first year of existence. Ovechkin signed a 5-year contract extension with the Capitals in July, 2021.

Alex Ovechkin has represented the Russian Hockey Team at international competitions since 2002. He was part of the Russian team that placed 2nd in the under-18 World Championships in 2002 and 3rd in the under-18 World Championships in 2003. Russia won the 2003 World Junior Championships and placed 2nd in the 2005 World Junior Championships. Ovechkin has competed for the Senior Russian National Team at the World Championships. Russia won Gold in 2008, 2012, and 2014. They won Silver in 2010 and 2015. They won Bronze in 2005, 2007, 2016, and 2019. Ovechkin played for Russia at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, but lost in the quarterfinals both times.

Alex Ovechkin has received harsh, but justified criticism for his personal relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite Russia’s unjust invasion of Ukraine in February, Ovechkin doubled down on his support for Putin in May.
