He played Major League Baseball for the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, California Angels, Seattle Mariners, Oakland A’s, Cleveland Indians, and the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent two years on the Toronto Blue Jays coaching staff, and four years on the Boston Red Sox coaching staff. Lovullo is the current manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Torey Lovullo was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 5th round of the 1987 MLB Draft. He played parts of the 1988 and 89 seasons with the Tigers. He then spent one season each playing for the Yankees (1991), Angels (1993), Mariners (1994), A’s (1996), Indians (1998), and Phillies (1999). Lovullo finished his MLB career with a .224 batting average, 165 hits, 15 home runs, and 60 runs batted in in 737 at-bats.

Torey Lovullo returned to baseball in 2011 as the first base coach for the Toronto Blue Jays as part of Manager John Farrell’s coaching staff. Lovullo spent two years with the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays went 81-81 in 2011 and 73-89 in 2012. Farrell departed Toronto following the 2012 season to fill the vacant managerial position for the Boston Red Sox. Farrell brought Lovullo with him. Lovullo would serve as bench coach for the Red Sox. The Red Sox won the World Series in 2013. Farrell would remain the Red Sox manager through the end of the 2017 season, but Lovullo left the Red Sox after the 2016 season to fill the managerial vacancy for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Torey Lovullo was hired by the Diamondbacks to be their manager after the 2016 season to replace the recently fired Chip Hale. The Diamondbacks won 93 games in 2017 and advanced all the way to the NLDS where they were swept by division rival Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 in a best of five series. Lovullo won the 2017 National League Manager of the Year award. In 2018, Lovullo had the Diamondbacks leading the NL West on September 1, but the team won just 11 games in the month and fell to an 82-80 record and a 3rd place finish in the NL West behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies and missed the playoffs. The Diamondbacks went 85-77 in 2019, but finished 2nd in the NL West and missed the playoffs. The Diamondbacks suffered their first losing season under Lovullo during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season where they went 25-35 in 60 games. The 2021 Diamondbacks went 52-110 in a season where the team was riddled with injuries and sloppy play. Lovullo had 337 managerial victories at the conclusion of the 2021 season and was tied with former Diamondbacks Manager Bob Melvin for 2nd all-time in franchise managerial wins. The Diamondbacks improved to 74-88 in the 2022 season. Lovullo reached 411 wins as a Diamondbacks manager, which is the most wins by a Diamondbacks manager in franchise history. He’s also the only Diamondbacks manager with 400 wins. The Diamondbacks picked up Lovullo’s contract option ensuring that he will return as manager for the 2023 season.
