Tony Dungy

Tony Dungy is a retired football player and former NFL head coach. He’s 67 years-old. He played college football at the University of Minnesota. He played in the NFL from 1977 to 1980. Dungy coached the Indianapolis Colts and coached them to the Super Bowl. Dungy previously coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is pro-life.

Tony Dungy was born in Jackson, Michigan on October 6, 1955. His father Wilbur served in the Air Force during World War II as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. Tony graduated from Parkside High School in 1973 and went on to attend the University of Minnesota. He played for the Golden Gophers football team. He was a quarterback. Dungy was named the most valuable player for the Golden Gophers in 1975 and 1976. He was also a Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient for academic and athletic achievement in 1977. Dungy went undrafted in the 1977 NFL draft.

Tony Dungy was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1977. He was converted from being a QB to playing as a safety. He was on the 1978 Steelers team that won Super Bowl XIII. Dungy played three seasons in the NFL from 1977 to 1979. He signed with the Giants in 1980, but was a practice squad member only. He retired from playing in 1980.

Tony Dungy returned to the NFL in 1996 to be the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay went 6-10 in his first season. They reversed their record in Dungy’s second season, posting a 10-6 record for the 1997 season and making the playoffs. They lost to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round. The Buccaneers made the playoffs four times in Dungy’s tenure with the team. They made it to the 1999 NFC Championship Game but lost to the Saint Louis Rams. Dungy compiled a 54-42 record during his time in Tampa Bay. He left the team in 2001.

Tony Dungy was hired by the Indianapolis Colts to be their head coach in 2002. They made the playoffs every year that Dungy was their head coach. They lost to the New England Patriots in the 2003 AFC Championship Game. The Colts went 12-4 in 2006 and played in Super Bowl XLI. They defeated the Chicago Bears to claim the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Dungy’s last season with the Colts was 2008. He finished with an overall record of 85-27 with the Colts. His overall career head coaching record is 139-69.

Tony Dungy was inducted into the Pro-Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

Tony Dungy is a pro-life activist. He participated in the annual March For Life in Washington DC in 2023. This was the first March For Life demonstration following the June 24, 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health 6-3 majority Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood. The decision says that the issue of abortion should be regulated by the state governments and that there is no constitutional guarantee for abortion. This decision erased a 50-year mistake.
