Greg Schulte

Greg Schulte is an American sports commentator and play-by-play announcer. He’s 69 years-old. He has covered basketball, football, and baseball for Arizona-based sports teams. He is well-known for his 25 seasons covering the Arizona Diamondbacks with over 3,000 games under his belt. Schulte also spent time as a pre-game and post-game analyst for the Arizona Cardinals and was a co-commentator for the Phoenix Suns alongside long-time radio announcer Al McCoy. His nickname is “the governor”. Schulte recently announced plans to retire.

Greg Schulte began his time covering Arizona sports when he was part of the broadcast team for the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Cardinals. The Suns were the first professional sports team based in Arizona. They played their first season in 1968/69. Though Schulte was not part of the original broadcast crew, he did join Al McCoy in the booth later on. McCoy has provided radio play-by-play since the Suns’ first season in the valley. The Cardinals relocated to Phoenix from St. Louis in 1987. They played home games in Tempe starting in 1988. They relocated to Glendale after the 2005 season, and currently play their home games at State Farm Stadium since 2006. Schulte spent time as the original host of the Cardinals pre-game and post-game shows. Schulte was eventually hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks to be their radio play-by-play announcer.

The Arizona Diamondbacks played their first MLB season as an expansion team in 1998. Greg Schulte was hired to be the play-by-play announcer for the Diamondbacks on 98.7 FM radio. Schulte called the game-winning hit during Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. He announced his 3,000th game for the Diamondbacks on April 19th, 2017. Schulte has worked alongside co-commentator Tom Candiotti since 2005. Schulte earned the nickname “governor” and his famous catchphrase is “deep drive, warning track, wall, you can touch them all”.

Greg Schulte will once again call games for the Diamondbacks in 2023. This will be his 26th season as the voice of the Diamondbacks. Schulte confirmed that it will also be his last.
