Jim Boeheim

Jim Boeheim is a former college basketball player and retired college basketball head coach. He’s 78 years-old. He played college basketball for Syracuse and later got hired to be the school’s head coach. Boeheim was head coach at Syracuse for 47 years, and has over 1,000 victories. Boeheim is the second winningest Division One head coach behind former Duke Head Coach Coach K. Boeheim is a member of both the College Basketball Hall of Fame and the Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame. He recently retired.

Jim Boeheim attended Syracuse University in 1962. He was recruited as a walk-on to play for the Division One basketball team. Boeheim was an under-the-radar player for his first three seasons at Syracuse. In his senior year, he was the captain of the team and helped lead the Orangemen (later shortened to Orange) to a 22-6 record and the school’s second NCAA Tournament appearance. After graduating from Syracuse, Boeheim played for the Scranton Miners of the now-defunct Eastern Professional Basketball League, and won two championships. Boeheim then pursued a career in coaching.

Jim Boeheim was hired by Syracuse University to become their head basketball coach ahead of the 1976/77 season. The Orangemen went 26-4 in Boeheim’s first season and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Orangemen made the Sweet 16 in the 1978/79 season and the 1979/80 season. They finished as NIT runner-up in the 1980/81 season. The Orangemen became a mainstay in the NCAA Tournament throughout the entirety of Boeheim’s tenure with the team. The Orangemen finished runner-up in the 1987 NCAA Tournament. They were also runner-up in the 1996 tournament. Jim Boeheim coached the Orangemen to a National Title at the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The Orangemen name was changed ahead of the 2004/05 season to be known simply as the Orange. The Orange made it to the NCAA Tournament Final Four 5 times under the direction of Boeheim. They won the Big East regular season title 10 times and the Big East Tournament title 5 times. Boeheim retired at the end of the 2022/23 season capping off a 47-year tenure as the school’s head coach. He finished with 1,015 wins, the second most by a Division One head coach trailing only former Duke Head Coach Coach K who recorded 1,202 wins. Coach K is also the winningest college basketball head coach all-time across all levels of college basketball. Stanford women’s head coach Tara Vanderveer is second behind Coach K with 1,157 wins.

Jim Boeheim was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. He was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
