Erin Matson

Erin Matson is a college field hockey coach and former player. She’s 23 years-old. She played college field hockey at the University of North Carolina and was a standout player during her time in Chapel Hill. Matson played for the United States field hockey team and won two bronze medals. She is now the head coach for the Tar Heels.

Erin Matson was born March 17, 2000 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. She began playing field hockey in 2006. Both of her parents are former college athletes. Her mom played field hockey and softball at Yale. Her dad played baseball at the University of Delaware. Matson attended Unionville High School where she played as a midfielder on her high school field hockey team. She graduated high school in 2018 and committed to play college field hockey for the University of North Carolina.

Erin Matson started her collegiate career at North Carolina in 2018. She had an immediate impact on the team as the Tar Heels won the 2018 ACC Championship and the 2018 NCAA National Championship. The Tar Heels won a total of five straight ACC titles, with Matson as the star of the team, from 2018 to 2022. The Tar Heels also won the NCAA Championship four times in that same stretch, including three straight from 2018 to 2020 and then winning again in 2022. Matson was able to compete for the Tar Heels for five years due to a Covid-19 Era rule that granted NCAA students an extra year of eligibility. Matson won both the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year five years straight from 2018 to 2022. She also won the Honda Sports Award three times for being the top collegiate field hockey player in the country. She won that award in 2019, 2020, and 2022. Matson graduated from the University of North Carolina in December 2022.

Erin Matson played for the United States field hockey team in 2017 and 2019. The United States won a Bronze Medal at the 2017 Pan-American Cup. They won a Bronze Medal at the 2019 Pan-American Games.

Erin Matson was hired to become the next head coach at her alma mater North Carolina on January 31, 2023, mere weeks after her graduation. Upon taking the position, Matson became the youngest Division One head coach as reported by the online news publication Just Women’s Sports, at just 22 years-old. The now 23 year-old coach, Matson successfully led the Tar Heels to their 6th straight ACC championship. By virtue of winning the ACC title, the Tar Heels secured an automatic bid for the 2023 NCAA Tournament. They were given the number 1 seed in this year’s tournament. The tournament began November 8th and the Tar Heels’ first game will be November 10th.
