Ali Krieger

Ali Krieger is a retired American soccer player. She’s 39 years-old. She played college soccer at Pennsylvania State University. She played professional soccer for the Washington Freedom, Washington Spirit, Orlando Pride, and Gotham FC. Krieger was a member of the United States soccer team for 11 years and won two World Cup titles. Krieger’s professional career spanned nearly two decades and she is a recognizable figure among diehard soccer fans.

Ali Krieger was born in Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC, on July 28, 1984. She started playing soccer at the age of 7. She attended high school at Hylton High School for one year and then Forest Park High School her final three years. Krieger was a standout star in her three years at Forest Park, which included an undefeated season. She was named both Washington Post Player of the Year and Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year in her senior season. Krieger then committed to play college soccer at Pennsylvania State University.

Ali Krieger played college soccer for Pennsylvania State University from 2003 to 2006. The Penn State Nittany Lions won the Big Ten Conference regular season championship all four years, including a Big Ten Tournament title in Krieger’s final season. Krieger was Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2006. Given Krieger’s role as a defensive back, goal scoring was not her primary role. She scored 11 goals in 94 games at Penn State.

Ali Krieger began her professional career by playing exhibition games for the Washington Freedom of the now-defunct Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPS) in 2004 and 2005 and a second stint in 2007. Playing these exhibition games allowed Krieger to retain collegiate eligibility while she was still attending Penn State. Krieger made her American soccer full-time professional career debut in 2013 as a defensive back for the Washington Spirit in the newly-created National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). She spent 3 years with the team and appeared in 62 games and scored 3 goals. Krieger played 83 games for the Orlando Pride from 2017 to 2021 before finishing her career with Gotham FC in 2022 and 2023. She played in 36 games for Gotham FC and helped them claim the 2023 NWSL Championship before retiring from professional soccer.

Ali Krieger made her United States soccer debut in 2008. For the next 11 years, Krieger was an integral part of the defensive backfield for the United States. The U.S. finished runner-up in the 2011 World Cup and then won back-to-back World Cups in 2015 and 2019. Krieger played in a total of 108 games for the U.S. and scored 1 goal.

Ali Krieger retired from professional soccer at the end of the 2023 NWSL season. She will be eligible for the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2027.
